DON HAVEN STATION AGENT GTF Another FAL went west- Don Haven passed away Monday, Sept 5th after a long battle with Parkinson's. He was 68 - started with FAL in 1960 until 1986. He moved with his wife to Eugene, OR in June of 2000 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's so he could be close to a daughter. For the 19 of my 23 years with FAL, I worked with Don. He was #1 in seniority here at the GTF station. -John Goldsmith, goldsmith.jk@netacape.com Thanks for the info, John. I hadn't heard about Don. Do you have an obituary and/or photos you could email me? Thanks, Jake (9/17/05) Parkinson's Disease is a chronic neurological condition named after Dr. James Parkinson, a London physician who was the first to describe the syndrome in 1817. PD is a slowly progressive disease that affects a small area of cells in the mid brain known as the substantia nigra. Gradual degeneration of these cells causes a reduction in a vital chemical known as "dopamine." This decrease in dopamine is what causes the symptoms of the disease. -www.myparkinsons.org/glossary.shtml The most common form of Parkinson's is slowly progressing and degenerative, usually associated with the following symptoms. All of these result from the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells: tremor or trembling of the arms, jaw, legs, and face; stiffness or rigidity of the limbs and trunk; bradykinesia – slowness of movement; postural instability, or impaired balance and coordination. -www.als.net/als101/glossary.asp (9/18/05) 372. Haven, D.W. 3-23-61 ALEA Seniority List effective March 1, 1962 (9/18/05) Was sorry to hear about Don Haven dying. I knew him from going into Great Falls on regular basis while stationed in Billings. Don worked for Jim Senstead (not sure if I'm spelling it right). Jim hired Don, I'll look through some of my older earlier 60's newsletters and see if there might be a picture. -Herb Schmidt (9/20/05)
